Cyprus and International Peacemaking
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (Import) (May, 1998)
Author: Farid Mirbagheri
Average review score:

A serious study of mediation in Cyprus
This book examines the role of international community and its main players in trying to mediate a solution in the Cyprus problem between 1964 and 1986. In so doing, it outlines the role of belligerent parties and outside actors as well as factors which detrmined the policy of each towards the conflict. The divergent policies of various players and thier pursuing different paths together with the intercommunal mistrust on the island are the focus of this study. Each period is closely studied and each main event comes under scrutiny. In the end a short piece brings the latest developments into focus and examines their impact on the conflict. In conclusion factors responsible for the stalemate are outlined and some suggestions out of the impasse are put forward.

Daily Life of the Ancient Egyptians
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (January, 2000)
Authors: Bob Brier and Hoyt Hobbs
Average review score:

The Realities of Daily Life
Even if you do not have much of an interest in Ancient Egypt this book is filled with information and explanations that will make you wonder why you haven't given much thought to the Ancient Egyptians before. The art, literature (first love poems!!), and architecture are enough to make you marvel. But the creation of a 365 day calander a by the ancient Egyptians a few thousand years ago is enough to give you pause; then you discover how really remarkable their skill and knowledge of medicine was and you sit back in awe, at least I did. Though there are illustrations, I wish there were more. And for some reason (though this may be unique to my eyes) the font that the Greenwood Press uses in this book, seems to require more focused reading. But these are very small concerns regarding a book that really gives you more than just information. It gives you a sense of the whole culture, and, if you're like me, you'll want to find out even more, which is a clear sign that the authors have done an excellent job.

Daughters of Eve: Women's Writing from the German Democratic Republic (European Women Writers)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (August, 1993)
Authors: Nancy Lukens and Dorothy Rosenberg
Average review score:

Gritty
This collection of stories completely fascinated me. I was unaware of the cultural/ethical differences of the former GDR prior to reading this book. The tales told, brought me within a very real human existence. The feel of the book was very bare boned; even gritty. The women depicted within the stories were tough, open minded, believable characters. Through this book I was allowed to realize the daily routines of a society closed off to us. This was a fresh read compared to the dribble of modern american fiction.

David Roberts: Travels in Egypt & the Holy Land
Published in Paperback by Pomegranate (September, 1999)
Authors: Debra N. Mancoff and David Roberts
Average review score:

Stuart McCoy
This is not nearly as nice as another David Robert's book, Egypt: Yesterday and Today, but the images are just as beautiful, even in their reduced size. His work is truly amazing and after traveling in Egypt you really appreciate his vision of the past.

Days of Honey, Days of Onion: The Story of a Palestinian Family in Israel
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (March, 1993)
Author: Michael Gorkin
Average review score:

A Real Page Turner
Wonderful book. Gives a very insightful summary of the history of Israel from an Arab perspective on a personal scale. The author envelopes you into the story of one ordinary family's life from life in the British mandate through the beginning of the Intifadah. As well as being a description of Arab life within Israel, this book also provides interesting material about the life of small-scale agriculturalists in Arabia.

Daytrips Israel: 25 Trips by Bus or Car (1 ed)

Author: Earl Steinbicker
Average review score:

I always take this book everytime I travel to Israel.
I have lived and traveled extensively in Israel and have found this book to be an enourmous help. It has easy to follow trips, which can be done in a day and allows the reader to see sights not listed in other travel guides. I have recommended it to others and have heard nothing but positive feedback. I advise bringing this book along with a travel guide with places to stay and eat for a complete and easy trip to Israel.

The Dead Sea: Myth, History, and Politics
Published in Paperback by Brandeis Univ (February, 1997)
Author: Barbara Kreiger
Average review score:

An excellent book well illustrated and documented
This is a wonderful book filled with facts that the recreational reader, the traveler and student of the Middle East will enjoy. Kreiger takes the reader on the journeys of several explorers in and around these waters. You celebrate with their accomplishments and are saddened with their inability to achieve all their goals Kreiger takes the reader back to prehistoric periods, over 14000 years ago, when Lake Lisan covered most of the Jordan Valley, including the Dead Sea. You are also left with the feeling of traveling down to the lowest point on dry land in this world of ours with the intense heat engulfing your body.

She speaks of the problems brought on by the social forces on this ecosystem. Will the Dead Sea survive? I highly recommend this book.
